Prisoners

This is the wall that prohibits Palestinians from visiting Israel. Palestinians are at this point more or less forbidden from the holy land. If you are not an Israeli citizen, or over the age of 35 with children, you simply cannot enter Israel. They are held as prisoners in a land impoverished, undeveloped and unbelievably crowded. Forbidden to travel, without a land, without hope. And we wonder why the blow themselves up...

I'd like to congratulate you with your fantastic blog. It really is. It's very interesting to see the human side of that conflict. You never get that from regular media. I think this tells you more about why there's a conflict rather than just giving history.

"And we wonder why the[sic] blow themselves up..." What *I* wonder is how much history you've actually read on the Arab-Israeli conflict, because your posts are written as if the present situation was invented in a vacuum, and your last sentence of this post in incredibly offensive to me. There are people living in "impoverished, undeveloped and unbelievably crowded" conditions all over the world; very few of them choose to blow themselves up or cheer those who do. PLUS, most of the suicide bombers are not necessarily impoverished or uneducated (see also the middle-class, university-educated World Trade Center bombers).

Where is the Palestinian Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr. who will try large-scale non-violent civil disobedience? You'll never see it, because the Palestinians have created a culture of death. They tell their children that martyrs go straight to heaven, and send young people and women to die. It's okay to sympathize with their cause, but how can you not condemn their means? How can you look for excuses for the unexcusable?

If you have a moral compass, you must apply it evenly. The occupation is wrong. Suicide bombing is wrong. Just because I understand why historically there is an occupation, does not mean I therefore justify the occupation. You may think you understand why these people blow themselves up, but it should not make it any less morally reprehensible.

And personally, I think you're wrong about the reasons. Despair might lead to suicide, but this is murder/suicide, and THAT is caused by other factors as well---including evil, when the people you murder are women and children (on BOTH sides of this conflict).

Nobody drives anyone else to evil. Evil is always a choice.

So maybe you SHOULD wonder a little more about why they blow themselves up.
